This week, Modern CLE is helping you shop for the holidays and support local businesses with curated gift guides created by area women in-the-know. All their perfect-gift picks are made or provided by women and men in Northeast Ohio. This is the first in a series of four guides we will publish throughout this week.
We all envy Sammy Friedman: As the managing director for the Cleveland Flea, she has the desirable position of working with the area’s best artisans—and snagging sneak peeks of their wares before they hit the Flea.
Yes, Friedman is very plugged in to this season’s best gifts.
“I’m fortunate to see firsthand the impact that local businesses and makers have on our community,” Friedman tells Modern CLE. But more than that, this time of year, “I also love gifts that have a story, or hold meaning,” she says. “When you shop local, whether you have the chance to meet the founder, maker, or owner, and you have a connection to them. That’s so cool.”
Here, Friedman shares the five items she thinks would make perfect presents this holiday season.
“This is one of my favorite pieces I have ever gifted myself,” says Friedman, who is pictured here in her leather turban—and who has plans to gift one to a friend this season. “It’s super warm—it’s lined with sheep shearling—and the perfect accent to any outfit,” she says. $190
Friedman calls these 14-karat yellow gold earrings “the ultimate, everyday earring.” She thinks they make the perfect gift for just about anyone—with pierced ears, that is. $125
“My dog is, of course, first on my gift list,” says Friedman. Her dog, named Scotch, enjoys this soft and squeaky toy, and when she gives it to him, she pairs with a bowl of protein-packed popcorn for dogs, also sold at Milo & Me in Lakewood. $12 and $3, respectively
Lucca’s brew kit includes a wood and brass pour-over stand, wood and bone coffee scoop, maple wood lid glass jar, greeting card, and an ornament. “I’d love to gift this set to my dad,” says Friedman. “This would be a perfect complement to his love of good coffee.” $125
“Bookmarking this bag for my fiancé,” says Friedman of the triple-strap, textured leather Kronos dopp kit that, at 9-inches long, easily fits into any suitcase or carry-on. “We love to travel and this is a great alternative to the Ziploc bag of toiletries,” she laughs. $225
