This week, Modern CLE is helping you shop for the holidays and support local businesses with curated gift guides created by area women in-the-know. All their perfect-gift picks are made or provided by women and men in Northeast Ohio. This is the second in a series of four guides we will publish throughout this week.
As the founder of Your Local Girl Gang, an online guide to women-owned businesses in Cleveland, Maria LeFebre values supporting local business—and experiential gift giving.
“Supporting local businesses is what I do, and for many reasons,” she tells Modern CLE. “I’ve been on the other side of the counter at a small business, [and] every sale as a small business employee feels triumphant. When you buy from a small business, you’re giving your money to an actual person … who will use that money to host their family for dinner, buy their kid the perfect gift, take a much-needed vacation, or simply grow their business.”
And you don’t have to buy a present that fits in a box to support local businesses, LeFebre says. Here are her top five gift picks for experiences you can give this season—or any time.
Studio How-To—in which LeFebre is pictured above—offers workshops on everything from knitting to belt and art collage making. “Maybe [your friend or family member] mentioned wanting to learn how to arm knit recently, or maybe they just need a new creative outlet,” LeFebre suggests. “With so many workshops to choose from, you also can’t go wrong by purchasing them a Studio How-To gift card and letting them choose.” Workshops starting from $40
“Even though this Pilates workout uses slow, low-impact moves, the dim lights and loud music will keep you focused and keep your intensity up,” making it the perfect gift for the girl or guy in your life who loves to exercise in new and fun ways, LeFebre says. From $30
Antidote Massage owner Danielle Warner “specializes in injury rehabilitation and workout recovery for athletes,” says LeFebre, but these massages are also perfect for the person in your life who simply “needs help healing.” Relaxation massages are available too. Call for prices
“What’s better than a day exploring Northeast Ohio wine country with your best friend?” asks LeFebre. If you can’t think of anything better, either, then consider purchasing a wine tour through FLOCK Wine & Travel, which offers several different tour options. Prices vary
Share-Apy is a comedy advice show by comedian Sam Dee, held the fourth Wednesday of each month at Forest City Brewery. “Surprise your friend by taking her to the awesome Forest City Brewery for a night of hilarious advice-giving,” LeFebre says. BOGO tickets on sale now for $5
